Tanah Lot Temple

Built on a rock just off the coastline, and surrounded by sea at high tide, Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most venerated sea temples, of which there are seven strung along the coast. The name itself means “island in the sea”. Dating from the sixteenth century, Tanah Lot is dedicated to the spirit of the ocean. Poisonous sea snakes reputedly guard the rock. Sunset here is particularly spectacular, and the temple is one of Bali’s most popular sights for visitors. The drive to and from Tanah Lot Temple takes 45 minutes approximately.

Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu is a Hindu temple set on a cliff high above the ocean, and is one of the nine directional temples of the island, guarding against evil spirits. Inside the inner sanctum is a statue of the founding priest Dwijendra who established the present form of Hindu-Dharma, and who chose this spot as his last earthly abode. Monkeys inhabit the rocks around the temple, looking for gifts of fruit from visitors. Uluwatu Beach is known for its surf and its full moon parties. The sunset views from here are magnificent.

Ubud

Ubud is a traditional village that became popular as an artists’ colony in the 1920s, when European painters came here, attracted by the light, the clean air and the beauty of the highlands. Despite its subsequent popularity amongst visitors, Ubud retains this gentle, bohemian atmosphere, and wandering amongst its art galleries and little restaurants is a great pleasure. Ubud Market is the place to pick up some quality handicrafts in addition to artworks. Nearby places of interest include Ubud Palace, Ubud Monkey Forest, luxuriant rice terraces that are renowned for their stunning beauty and several Hindu temples and meditation temples that inspired the book-turned-film Eat, Pray, Love. Ubud is reached within one hour from the resort.
